Poker Implied Odds: the Basics

The key to winning in Poker, regardless of variant, involves knowledge of implied odds. A lot of online players do not avail of this aspect of the game, either through a lack of understanding or dismissing it as unimportant. It is unfortunate, for implied odds will be indispensable in high stakes games.

The basic Poker odds, such as those for making the proper draws or bets, is fairly easy to learn. Even if you do not know the mathematics involved, most of the odds for making a two pair or straight, for making a flush draw on the turn, can be found in several online Poker strategy guides.

With the basic odds, you can just print them out and have them by your computer until you have committed them to memory.

With Poker implied odds, the situation is quite different. It is not as exact as drawing odds, because what you are trying to do is gauge the wager that your opponent will make on the river, along with the bet you are currently putting up. Because of this reason, implied odds are more complex.

To make it work for you, you have to consider what kind of Poker player your opponent is. Does he call on the river? There are a lot of players who do, opting to take the risk rather than being bluffed out. Others, however, fold when they see an Ace or a face card on the last card. You have to factor in these elements when making a decision on how much to bet, especially if the pot is substantial.

One way of helping your Poker implied odds estimate to be correct is to evaluate the kind of hands that your opponent brought to the showdown in previous hands. This way, you will have something to base your calculations on.

Of course, you should also check the Poker pot size. Including implied odds in your bet can be risky, and you have to ask yourself if the pot size is worth the risk that you will take.

Implied odds in Poker, as stated, is not an exact science, and during your first few attempts it may cost you some money. Always keep in mind that you should have player reading skills developed to help you use it properly.
