The Myth and Reality of Bluffing

Bluffing is an important aspect of poker as it adds numerous layers of strategy to the game. Aside from that, bluffs, particularly the successful ones, bring in drama and excitement to poker games especially those which involve high stakes.

This is why most people, in particular those that are not that familiar with poker, dwell in the misleading notion that bluffing is central to the game. This particular type of poker players set out to play in low stake games hoping to win it big only to end up paying for their foolishness of having absolute faith in bluffs.

Yes, bluffing is essential in poker but certainly, it is not the central element of the game and it is no more important than other mechanics like slow playing and raising.

Although a player that does not know how to bluff cannot hope to win as frequent as another player who has mastered the art of bluffing, having mistaken conceptions which regard to bluffing will also prove costly for any player especially in low limit games as your opponents most likely will call your bluff if they noticed that because of your blind devotion, you are bluffing frequently and blindly as well.

With these said, one must still understand and practice the art and science of the bluff because even if poker does not revolve around it, it is still an extremely important aspect of the game. With the right methods, bluffs can be used as effective tools of deception that will prove to be invaluable for anyone.

A bluff is a tactic wherein you play in a way such that you hint to your opponents that you have a strong hand when in fact, your hand is relatively weak. Giving the impression that you have a strong hand is done to dissuade your opponents from playing aggressively and to level the playing field even if your hand do not have high chances of winning the pot to begin with.

Bluffing is important also because it sows confusion among your opponents. Opponents who are aware that you never bluff will always play optimally when playing against you as they will know that you have a strong hand when you are betting for value and as such will not attempt to go tit for tat against you. They will only play when they have sensed that you are playing rather halfheartedly as that will mean that you have a weak hand.

If you bluff randomly on the other hand, then your opponents will have no idea as to what the value of your hand is as they will not be sure as to whether you are bluffing or not. This makes the bluff not only a perfect cover for you when you have a weak hand but also when you have strong hands as there is the probability that your opponents will call you thinking that you are just doing a bluff.

Poker, for many people, is all about bluffing which is erroneous as there are also many other mechanics that play important roles in the game. That is not to say doing bluffs is not essential however as it is important if you intend to win it big in poker. The important thing to remember rather is that bluffing is not the end-all, be-all of poker and that you should not place your hopes high on a single mechanic such as the bluff.
